## Short answer

Choose CleanMyMac if you want one subscription that also covers malware scanning, duplicates and maintenance tasks. Choose MoreRoom if your problem is disk space, you want each item explained before it goes to the Trash, and you would rather start for free.

## TL;DR

- CleanMyMac is a broad Mac maintenance suite from MacPaw; MoreRoom is a storage manager focused only on disk space.
- As of October 2026, CleanMyMac is sold as a subscription or a one-time purchase, with a 7-day free trial; MoreRoom has a free version with no time limit.
- CleanMyMac includes malware protection, a duplicate and similar-file finder and performance tools; MoreRoom has no malware or performance tools, and makes identical files share their space instead of deleting them.
- MoreRoom explains System Data, recognises 249 known space hogs with safety badges, and moves items to the Trash first, with Undo.
- CleanMyMac supports macOS 11 and later; MoreRoom requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

If you want one app that cleans, scans for malware, finds duplicates and runs maintenance tasks, CleanMyMac covers more ground than MoreRoom. If your problem is specifically disk space — what is using it, whether it is safe to remove, and getting it back without surprises — MoreRoom is built only for that, and its free version does not expire. Many people will be well served by either; the right choice depends on which of those two jobs matters to you.

## What each app is

**CleanMyMac** is MacPaw's long-running Mac maintenance suite. As of October 2026, MacPaw's store offers two plans. **Essential Trio** includes Cleanup (junk and system clutter), Applications (managing and uninstalling apps) and My Clutter (duplicate and similar files). **All-in-One** adds Smart Care (scan, clean and fix in one click), Performance, Protection (malware detection and removal), Space Lens (a visual map of storage) and Cloud Cleanup. You can buy it from MacPaw, on the Mac App Store or through Setapp, and it runs on macOS 11 or later.

**MoreRoom** is a native macOS storage manager by Yando Pte. Ltd. It scans your disk and shows the result as a treemap, rings or a list. It explains what is inside System Data — local snapshots, swap and sleep image, Preboot and Recovery — and what macOS will purge on its own. A catalogue of 249 rules recognises known space hogs, from Xcode build data to local AI models, and labels each one “Safe to remove” or “Review first”, including whether it comes back. It requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later and is downloaded from [moreroom.app](https://moreroom.app/download).

## Where CleanMyMac is better

- **Breadth.** CleanMyMac does far more than storage. Malware protection, a finder that removes duplicate and similar files, performance tools and a one-click Smart Care routine are all things MoreRoom does not do. If you want a single tool for general Mac upkeep, that breadth is a real advantage.
- **Older macOS versions.** CleanMyMac supports macOS 11 and later. MoreRoom needs macOS 15 Sequoia, so on an older Mac CleanMyMac may be the only one of the two you can install.
- **Where you can buy it.** It is on the Mac App Store and in Setapp, which some people prefer for billing and updates. MoreRoom is not on the Mac App Store yet.
- **More Macs per purchase.** MacPaw's store offers plans for 1, 2 or 5 Macs. A MoreRoom Pro licence covers 3 Macs.
- **Maturity and support.** CleanMyMac is an established product with earlier generations behind it (MacPaw offers CleanMyMac X users an upgrade), and MacPaw's store lists 24/7 technical and sales support. MoreRoom is a new app at version 0.2.1.

## Where MoreRoom is better

- **A free version that does not expire.** MoreRoom's free version includes the full scan, all three views, the System Data breakdown, all 249 rules and removing items one at a time. CleanMyMac offers a 7-day trial.
- **Explanations before deletion.** Each recognised folder gets a plain-language explanation, a safety badge and whether it will come back. If you want to understand your disk rather than run a one-click clean, this is the main difference. You can browse the same information on the web in the [folder directory](https://moreroom.app/folders).
- **Trash first, with Undo.** MoreRoom never deletes on its own. Items go to the Trash first, and you can undo. Where a tool has an official command — such as `xcrun simctl delete` for simulators or `brew cleanup --prune=all` for Homebrew — MoreRoom uses it and labels that step as permanent.
- **Developer and AI storage.** The rules cover Xcode, simulators, Docker, Homebrew, npm and other package managers, and local AI models such as those stored by Ollama or Hugging Face. Pro adds Project hibernation, which removes rebuildable folders like `node_modules` from inactive projects and restores them in one click.
- **Storage over time.** Storage Weather keeps a 30-day history of free space, forecasts when the disk could fill up and shows what grew this week. Ghost space shows space held by deleted files that an app still keeps open, and which app to quit to get it back.
- **Space back without deleting.** Free Without Deleting finds identical files and files you haven’t used for two months. With Pro, identical copies share their space as APFS clones and cold files are compressed by macOS, so every file stays in place. Free Disk Tools test a drive’s speed, read its health and check it without changing anything.
- **Lower price for Pro.** As of October 2026, MoreRoom Pro is $19.99 a year or $39.99 once, for 3 Macs, with a 30-day refund and no account.

## What MoreRoom does not do

Both apps work inside the limits of macOS. MoreRoom does not delete APFS or Time Machine snapshots, clean system (root) caches or “free RAM”. It does not delete duplicates or look for similar files either: it makes identical copies share their space, and only compresses files you haven’t used for two months. If removing duplicates and similar photos is your main need, CleanMyMac's My Clutter, or a dedicated duplicate finder, is the better fit. For background on why snapshots and purgeable space behave the way they do, see [What is purgeable space?](https://moreroom.app/learn/purgeable-space-mac) and [Time Machine local snapshots](https://moreroom.app/learn/time-machine-local-snapshots).

## Which should you choose?

### Choose CleanMyMac if…

- you want malware scanning, duplicate finding and maintenance in the same app as storage cleanup;
- your Mac runs macOS 11 to macOS 14;
- you prefer buying through the Mac App Store or already pay for Setapp.

### Choose MoreRoom if…

- your main problem is a full disk, especially System Data, developer tools or local AI models;
- you want to see what each item is and whether it is safe before anything is removed;
- you want a free tool you can keep using, with an optional low-cost Pro upgrade.

### Or use neither

If you only need a quick look, macOS already has **System Settings › General › Storage**, with recommendations such as Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage and Empty Trash Automatically. Our guide [How to free up space on a Mac](https://moreroom.app/learn/free-up-space-mac) walks through the manual steps first.

## FAQ

### Is CleanMyMac a subscription?

As of October 2026, MacPaw sells CleanMyMac as a yearly or monthly subscription, and also as a one-time purchase on its own store and the Mac App Store. MacPaw notes that major-version upgrades are free for subscribers but not for one-time purchases.

### Does MoreRoom remove malware like CleanMyMac?

No. MoreRoom is a storage manager and has no malware scanner. If malware protection is part of what you want, CleanMyMac's All-in-One plan includes it.

### Can I use MoreRoom and CleanMyMac together?

Yes. They do not depend on each other. Some people use CleanMyMac for maintenance and malware checks and MoreRoom to understand what fills the disk.

### Which one is free?

MoreRoom has a free version with no time limit that includes the full scan, the maps, the 249 rules and removing items one by one. CleanMyMac offers a 7-day free trial with full functionality, after which a plan is needed.

### Does CleanMyMac work on older Macs?

MacPaw lists macOS 11 or later, so CleanMyMac runs on many Macs that cannot install MoreRoom, which needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
