## What is it?

The standard place where apps store temporary, rebuildable data: downloaded images, thumbnails, web content, compiled files and update packages, one folder per app. It typically holds a few hundred MB to tens of GB, and macOS can clear some of it on its own when space runs low.

## What happens if you delete it?

Apps rebuild their caches as they run. Some come back within minutes, so the space gained can be short-lived, and each app may start more slowly once.

## How to remove it properly

Quit the apps whose caches you clear, then move their folders inside `~/Library/Caches` to the Trash (Finder › Go › Go to Folder…). Prefer clearing the largest specific folders over everything at once, and restart afterwards.

## Before you delete it

Do not delete the Caches folder itself, and avoid clearing caches of apps that are running. A few apps keep offline downloads in their cache, which then need downloading again.
