The short answer

Usually, after a check. Might hold something you care about. Look inside before removing it.

What is it?

/Users/Shared/UnrealEngine/Launcher/VaultCache holds assets you downloaded from Fab or the former Unreal Marketplace through the Epic Games Launcher, kept so they can be added to projects. Once added, assets are copied into each project. Packs can be large, from hundreds of MB to tens of GB each.

Asset packs downloaded before being added to projects. Assets already in projects are not affected.

What happens if you delete it?

Assets you own can be downloaded again from your Fab library or the launcher’s Vault when you next add them to a project. Assets already in projects are not affected.

How to remove it properly

Use the Epic Games Launcher to manage vault downloads where it offers that option. Otherwise quit the launcher and move the asset folders you no longer need to the Trash in Finder (Go › Go to Folder… /Users/Shared/UnrealEngine/Launcher/VaultCache).

From the app itself: Clear the Vault cache from the Epic launcher settings.

Before you delete it

Assets that are no longer available on Fab may not be downloadable again.

How MoreRoom helps

MoreRoom recognises this item and labels it “Review first”: it shows what’s inside, its size and last use, so you can decide. Nothing is removed without your say, and everything goes to the Trash first, with Undo.
