The short answer

Usually, after a check. Might hold something you care about. Look inside before removing it.

What is it?

rustup installs each Rust toolchain (stable, beta, dated nightlies, specific versions) in its own folder under ~/.rustup/toolchains, including the compiler, standard library, components and offline documentation. Nightly and version-pinned toolchains pile up quickly, and each often takes around a gigabyte or more.

Installed Rust toolchains (nightlies pile up). The most recently used is kept; rustup reinstalls a pinned toolchain when needed.

What happens if you delete it?

rustup installs a pinned toolchain again when a project’s rust-toolchain.toml asks for it, or when you run rustup toolchain install <name>. Nothing else is lost.

How to remove it properly

Run rustup toolchain list to see what is installed and which one is the default, then rustup toolchain uninstall <name> for each toolchain you no longer need. This is rustup’s own command and deletes permanently.

Use the tool’s official command: rustup toolchain uninstall <toolchain>

  • MoreRoom keeps the newest 1 and suggests the older ones.

How MoreRoom helps

MoreRoom recognises this item and labels it “Review first”: it shows what’s inside, its size and last use, so you can decide. Nothing is removed without your say, and everything goes to the Trash first, with Undo.

When the tool is installed, MoreRoom runs its official command for you (rustup toolchain uninstall <toolchain>) instead of deleting files — and tells you that this step can’t be undone.
