The short answer

Usually, after a check. Might hold something you care about. Look inside before removing it.

What is it?

VS Code keeps state for each folder or workspace you open in ~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/workspaceStorage, in folders with hashed names: open editors, UI layout, data saved by extensions and AI chat history. Folders for projects you no longer open stay forever. Only those untouched for 90 days are considered here.

Per-folder state (open tabs, extension data, AI chat history) for folders not opened in 90 days. Not recoverable once deleted.

What happens if you delete it?

No. If you reopen that project, VS Code starts it with a clean state: no restored tabs, and extension data and chat history for that workspace are gone. Your project files are not touched.

How to remove it properly

Quit VS Code, then move old folders to the Trash in Finder (Go › Go to Folder… ~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/workspaceStorage). Each folder’s workspace.json shows which project it belongs to.

Quit the app that uses it, then move it to the Trash. Empty the Trash when you’re sure.

  • MoreRoom only suggests items unused for 90 days or more.

Before you delete it

Copilot and other AI chat sessions for a workspace are stored here; keep folders whose chat history you may want.

How MoreRoom helps

MoreRoom recognises this item and labels it “Review first”: it shows what’s inside, its size and last use, so you can decide. Nothing is removed without your say, and everything goes to the Trash first, with Undo.
