The short answer

Usually, after a check. Might hold something you care about. Look inside before removing it.

What is it?

Vagrant downloads base images, called boxes, into ~/.vagrant.d/boxes and uses them to create new virtual machines. Each box and version is kept until you remove it. A box is typically 0.5–5 GB.

Base images Vagrant downloaded. Removed boxes download again on the next vagrant up.

What happens if you delete it?

A removed box is downloaded again the next time a Vagrantfile needs it during vagrant up. VMs already created from the box are separate and are not affected.

How to remove it properly

Run vagrant box list to see your boxes, vagrant box remove <name> to delete one, or vagrant box prune to remove outdated versions. These commands delete permanently.

Use the tool’s official command: vagrant box remove <box>

Before you delete it

Boxes from a private source, or that are no longer published, cannot be downloaded again.

How MoreRoom helps

MoreRoom recognises this item and labels it “Review first”: it shows what’s inside, its size and last use, so you can decide. Nothing is removed without your say, and everything goes to the Trash first, with Undo.

When the tool is installed, MoreRoom runs its official command for you (vagrant box remove <box>) instead of deleting files — and tells you that this step can’t be undone.
