The short answer
There is no single best app: free tools like GrandPerspective, OmniDiskSweeper, AppCleaner and DevCleaner for Xcode cover single jobs well, DaisyDisk is a mature one-time purchase, CleanMyMac is the broadest suite, and MoreRoom focuses on explaining storage and removing it through the Trash.
In short
- Start with System Settings › General › Storage; it is built in, free and handles the basics.
- For a free visual map, GrandPerspective is open source; for a free size-sorted list, OmniDiskSweeper does the job.
- DaisyDisk costs $9.99 once for up to 5 personal Macs, as of October 2026, and deletes permanently after a 5-second countdown.
- CleanMyMac is the broadest option, adding malware protection and duplicate finding, sold as a subscription or one-time purchase.
- MoreRoom is free to use and explains System Data and 249 known space hogs, moving items to the Trash first, with Undo.

The best Mac storage cleaner depends on the job. If you only need to see what is large, a free analyzer such as GrandPerspective or OmniDiskSweeper is enough. If you want a polished map for a one-time price, DaisyDisk is a long-standing choice. If you want one app for maintenance, malware and duplicates, CleanMyMac is the broadest. If your space disappears into System Data, developer tools or local AI models and you want each item explained before it goes to the Trash, that is what MoreRoom is built for. We make MoreRoom, so read our picks with that in mind; every fact about other apps below comes from its developer’s own site or the Mac App Store, as of October 2026.
Start with what macOS already has
Before installing anything, open System Settings › General › Storage. Apple offers recommendations — Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage and Empty Trash Automatically, which erases items that have been in the Trash for more than 30 days — and an Info button next to each category to review and delete files. Apple also notes that macOS clears caches and logs that are safe to delete when space is needed. What it cannot do is show inside System Data: Apple’s own guide says you can’t manage the contents of that category. For the details, see What is System Data on a Mac? and How to free up space on a Mac.
The apps, briefly
MoreRoom (Yando Pte. Ltd., macOS 15 Sequoia or later) is a storage manager. The free version scans the disk into a treemap, rings or list; explains System Data; recognises 249 known space hogs with “Safe to remove” or “Review first” badges; and adds Storage Weather, Ghost space, Keep in the Cloud and an app uninstaller. Pro ($19.99 a year or $39.99 once, 3 Macs) adds the Collector, Goal mode and Project hibernation. It does not find duplicates, remove malware or delete snapshots.
CleanMyMac (MacPaw, macOS 11 or later) is a maintenance suite. Its All-in-One plan includes Smart Care, Cleanup, Applications, My Clutter (duplicates and similar files), Performance, Protection (malware), Space Lens and Cloud Cleanup; the cheaper Essential Trio plan covers Cleanup, Applications and My Clutter. It is sold by subscription or as a one-time purchase, with a 7-day free trial, through MacPaw, the Mac App Store and Setapp.
DaisyDisk (Software Ambience Corp.) is a visual disk analyzer: $9.99 once for up to 5 personal Macs. It breaks down System Data, finds and manages snapshots and scans cloud storage accounts. It deletes permanently after a 5-second countdown.
GrandPerspective (Erwin Bonsma, macOS 14 or later) is a free, open-source treemap viewer, also $2.99 on the Mac App Store. It can save and export scans, and moves deleted items to the Trash.
OmniDiskSweeper (The Omni Group) is a free list of your files from largest to smallest, with buttons to Trash or open them.
WizTree (Antibody Software) arrived on the Mac as WizTreeMac 1.00 on 16 September 2026, for macOS 12 or later. It is free for personal use; commercial use needs a Supporter Code, priced by organisation size from $25 for an individual.
DevCleaner for Xcode (One Minute Games, macOS 14 or later) is a free, open-source cleaner for Xcode caches, with optional tips and a command line tool.
AppCleaner (FreeMacSoft) is a free drag-and-drop uninstaller; version 3.7 supports macOS 15 and later, with older versions for earlier systems.
Pearcleaner is a free, source-available uninstaller for macOS 13 and later with many extras. Its developer lists it as on hold since the end of 2025.
Best for each need
Best built-in option: Apple Storage settings
Free, already installed, and enough for many people. Start here.
Best free visual map: GrandPerspective
Open source, actively updated (version 3.8.1 in September 2026), and able to save and export scans. If you are comfortable judging what is safe to delete, it is hard to beat for free.
Best simple free list: OmniDiskSweeper
A size-sorted list with Trash and Open buttons. Nothing more, nothing less.
Best one-time purchase analyzer: DaisyDisk
A mature, polished map for $9.99, covering up to 5 personal Macs and older macOS versions. Remember that its deletions are permanent.
Best all-in-one maintenance suite: CleanMyMac
If you also want malware protection, duplicate finding and performance tools in one subscription, CleanMyMac covers far more than storage.
Best for Xcode only: DevCleaner for Xcode
Free, open source and scriptable. If Xcode caches are your only problem, start here.
Best free uninstaller: AppCleaner
Drop an app on the window and remove it with its related files.
Best for switching from Windows: WizTree
If you already know WizTree on Windows, WizTreeMac brings the same tool to macOS 12 and later, free for personal use.
Best for explaining System Data and developer storage: MoreRoom
If you want to know what each large folder is, whether it comes back, and to remove it through the Trash with Undo — or through a tool’s own command such as xcrun simctl delete or brew cleanup --prune=all where one exists — MoreRoom is designed for that. It requires macOS 15 Sequoia.
How to choose safely
- Know what you are deleting. Large is not the same as safe. Archives, app data and cloud folders often matter more than their size suggests. Our folder directory explains common folders.
- Prefer the Trash. It gives you a second chance. Remember that space only returns when you empty it.
- Use a tool’s own command when it has one. Docker, Homebrew, simulators and package managers keep track of their files; deleting folders behind their back can leave them confused.
- Expect some numbers to disagree. Finder, Storage settings and disk analyzers count purgeable space, snapshots and clones differently. See purgeable space and APFS clones.
- Keep a backup. Whatever you use, a current Time Machine or other backup makes any mistake recoverable.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a storage cleaner on a Mac at all?
Not always. macOS manages caches and purgeable space on its own, and System Settings › General › Storage covers the basics. A third-party tool helps when you need to see what is inside large folders, System Data or developer tools, or want to remove leftovers safely.
What is the best free Mac disk analyzer?
It depends on the view you prefer. GrandPerspective is a free, open-source treemap; OmniDiskSweeper is a free list sorted by size; WizTree's Mac version is free for personal use; MoreRoom's free version adds explanations and a System Data breakdown but needs macOS 15 Sequoia.
Which apps move files to the Trash instead of deleting them?
According to their developers, GrandPerspective and OmniDiskSweeper move items to the Trash, and MoreRoom moves items to the Trash first with Undo. DaisyDisk deletes permanently after a 5-second countdown so that space is recovered immediately.
Does WizTree work on a Mac?
Yes. Since 16 September 2026, WizTree's developer offers WizTreeMac 1.00 for macOS 12 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. It is free for personal use, and Supporter Codes work on both Windows and Mac.
Is it safe to use a Mac cleaner?
Most problems come from deleting something without knowing what it is. Prefer tools that explain items, use the Trash, or call a tool's own cleanup command, and keep a current backup.
Which is best for Xcode and developer caches?
DevCleaner for Xcode is a free, focused choice for Xcode alone. MoreRoom covers Xcode plus simulators, Docker, package managers and local AI models.
