Explore your disk: map, rings, list and inspector

Switch between the map, rings and list, zoom into folders, read the inspector, search all files and preview them with Quick Look.

In short

  • After a scan, the map shows every file as a block sized by the space it really takes. Rings and List show the same folder differently: ⌘1, ⌘2 and ⌘3 switch views.
  • Click an item to open the inspector; double-click a folder (or press Return) to zoom in, Esc or ⌘↑ to zoom out. The path at the top of the window takes you back up.
  • The search field in the toolbar searches every file of the scan, largest first. Press the Space bar to preview the selected file with Quick Look.

The three views

After a scan, click Map in the sidebar’s Explore section. The segmented control in the toolbar switches between three views of the same folder (also in the View menu):

  • Map (⌘1) — a treemap: every file is a block sized by the space it really takes on disk. Folders are framed, with their name on top. Big things jump out.
  • Rings (⌘2) — a sunburst of folders inside folders, from the centre outwards. Click the centre to go up one level.
  • List (⌘3) — a table of the current folder with Name, Size, Files and Modified columns and the safety label of known items. Click a column header to sort.

Colours mean the same thing everywhere: one colour per kind of content: Applications, Developer, AI Models, Photos & Media, Documents, Games & 3D, System, Caches & Leftovers and Other. The bar under the title adds them up for the folder you’re looking at; hover over a segment to see its size.

The inspector

Selecting an item opens the inspector, a floating card on the right. It shows:

  • the item’s name, a friendly description when MoreRoom recognises it, and its path;
  • its size on disk, in large type, and its Logical size (the size of its contents, which can differ — see why numbers differ);
  • the number of Files, the Category, Last used (when macOS knows it) and Last modified;
  • notes such as APFS clone (it shares space with a copy), iCloud — Only in the cloud, or Access — Needs Full Disk Access;
  • for items MoreRoom recognises, a safety label and a plain-language explanation.

Its buttons: Move to Trash (or Remove with a tool’s own command, for items such as simulators), Add to Collector (Pro), Reveal in Finder, and Zoom In for folders or Open for files. Offload to External Drive is shown but not available yet: it’s coming in a future version. Press Esc or click × to close the inspector.

Search all files

Once a scan is done, a search field appears in the toolbar (“Search all files”). Type part of a name: results come from the whole scan, largest first, with their path. Click a result to show it on the map, inside its folder.

Quick Look

Select a file and press the Space bar (or View › Quick Look, ⌘Y) to preview it without opening it. Press the Space bar again to close the preview.

Smart Views

Below the Explore section of the sidebar, Smart Views lists the kinds of content that take more than 50 MB in this scan — for example Developer, Applications or Caches & Leftovers — with their total. Click one to see the items MoreRoom recognises in that category, grouped by tool, with their safety labels.
